▶️ Opening a Competition Image

Step-by-step: from download to login⏱ ~3 min

Opening a CyberPatriot image correctly is critical — doing it wrong can corrupt the image or start you with the wrong configuration. Follow these steps every time.

Step-by-Step: VMware Workstation Pro

  1. 1.Verify your image checksum (see Lesson 1.2) before opening anything
  2. 2.Open VMware Workstation Pro from Start Menu or desktop
  3. 3.Click 'Open a Virtual Machine' (not 'Create a New Virtual Machine')
  4. 4.Browse to your downloaded image folder and select the .vmx file
  5. 5.Click 'Play virtual machine' (the green play button)
  6. 6.When prompted: select 'I copied it' — NOT 'I moved it' (this preserves the original VM state)
  7. 7.Click 'OK' on any Removable Devices pop-up
  8. 8.Log in with the credentials provided in your CyberPatriot StartEx email
⚠ WarningAlways click 'I copied it' when VMware asks. 'I moved it' changes internal VM identifiers and can cause scoring or networking issues.

Before You Start Scoring — Do This First

🔒 SecurityTake a snapshot immediately after opening the image and logging in, before making any changes. Name it 'Clean Start'. If you accidentally break something critical, you can revert and start over.

VMware Keyboard Shortcut: Host Key

  • Press Ctrl+Alt to release your mouse/keyboard from the VM back to your host
  • In VMware, the default 'host key' is Ctrl+Alt
  • If your screen goes black inside the VM: press any key or click inside the VM window
