๐Ÿ“ž Vishing & Impersonation

Vishing โ€” Voice Phishing

Vishing is a form of phishing that occurs over voice communication, usually phone calls. Attackers impersonate trusted entities โ€” your bank, tech support, a government agency โ€” and persuade victims to reveal sensitive information over the phone.

โš  WarningAI voice cloning has made vishing dramatically more dangerous. Attackers can now clone a real person's voice from just a few seconds of audio (pulled from a YouTube video, voicemail, or social media clip) and use it to impersonate a CEO, family member, or colleague in a live or recorded call. Several companies have lost millions of dollars to AI-cloned 'CEO voice' wire transfer scams.

Impersonation

Attackers pretend to be someone else โ€” online or in person โ€” to gain trust and manipulate the target into disclosing confidential information or taking specific actions. This can be as simple as a phone call claiming to be IT support, or as elaborate as physically showing up wearing a uniform to gain building access (this overlaps with 'pretexting' and physical social engineering).

Impersonation ScenarioWhat They're AfterRed Flag
'IT support' calling about a 'security issue'Remote access software install, password resetLegitimate IT rarely cold-calls demanding immediate remote access
'Bank fraud department'Account number, OTP code, card PINBanks never ask for your full password or OTP over the phone
Delivery driver / contractor at the doorBuilding access, badge cloning opportunityNo advance notice, no verifiable company ID, vague details
'New employee' asking for a badge swipe ('tailgating')Physical building access without their own credentialsAlways verify identity before holding a door for someone you don't recognize
๐Ÿ”’ SecurityIf someone contacts you claiming to be from a company or organization, ask for proof of identity, or โ€” better โ€” hang up and contact the organization directly using a phone number you look up independently, not one the caller provides.
