๐ Bandwidth vs Throughput
Why your internet feels slower than what you pay forโฑ ~2 min
Imagine a 10-lane highway (high bandwidth). At 3am with no traffic, you zoom at full speed. At 5pm during rush hour, you crawl โ same highway, much slower. Bandwidth is the maximum capacity of the road. Throughput is your actual speed right now, affected by traffic (congestion), road work (latency), and accidents (packet loss). Your ISP sells you the highway width, not a guaranteed speed.
Bandwidth โ the theoretical maximum
| Unit | Abbreviation | How Much? |
|---|---|---|
| Bits per second | bps | 1 character roughly |
| Kilobits per second | Kbps | 1,000 bps โ old dial-up era |
| Megabits per second | Mbps | 1,000,000 bps โ typical home broadband |
| Gigabits per second | Gbps | 1,000,000,000 bps โ fiber and data centers |
| Terabits per second | Tbps | 1,000,000,000,000 bps โ internet backbone links |
Throughput โ what you actually get
- โขThroughput is always โค bandwidth โ never higher, often much lower
- โขLatency โ the delay before data starts moving (like the time before your car starts moving on a green light)
- โขCongestion โ too many devices sharing the same link simultaneously
- โขPacket loss โ TCP retransmits lost packets, which uses bandwidth and adds delay
- โขThe weakest link rule โ your speed is limited by the slowest segment in the entire path from source to destination
Bandwidth = pipe diameter (how wide it is). Throughput = actual water flow rate. Even a huge pipe delivers less water if there's a kink in it, a partial blockage, or low pressure at the source. Your 1 Gbps fiber connection to a server across the world flows through dozens of routers โ if any one of them is congested, your throughput drops.
Why your speed test doesn't match your plan
- โขISPs advertise 'up to' speeds โ not guaranteed speeds
- โขWiFi adds overhead vs wired Ethernet โ always test speed via cable for a true reading
- โขMultiple devices sharing one connection split the bandwidth
- โขTime of day matters โ evenings are peak hours (everyone streaming Netflix at once)
- โขYour router's age matters โ older routers bottleneck even fast internet connections
Your internet plan is 500 Mbps. During a speed test, you get 85 Mbps. Your laptop is connected via WiFi and 4 other family members are streaming video. Which factor is LEAST likely causing the slowdown?
